Things to do on the Weekend (for kids)

I was at Farmers Market several weeks ago and was handed a flyer for a kid's cooking class. Since we watch a lot of Food Network at home I asked the kids if they were interested. I like the idea of a professional teaching them simple things like knife skills (my reaction to a child with a knife is a little hysterical and defeats the effort). Since then the kidlets have gone to Chef Jacklene's in La Canada. She teaches out of her own home on Saturday mornings. They've learned how to make French bread and Shepherd's Pie, among other tasty treats. The kids love it!

What I love is that a 3-minute drive takes us to a professional chef willing to teach my kids to cook! For more information:

Since our marriage would clearly not survive anything beyond the interior of the main floor, we agreed on hiring a local contractor to finish the deck:

 
Lovely Jeff Brown, no relation to the Frame family of builders with no emotional connection to the work being done. He has done a fabulous job! Most recently he has demolished our front patio (in an effort to stop the rain and snow from leaking into the basement) and discovered an enormous amount of dry rot under the house (note to self: do not have husband do the physical inspection on a house he would like to buy).  More later....

La Canada is hosting 9.10.11 festivities all weekend...connect , celebrate and remember! There was a big kick-off tonight in Memorial Park. Tomorrow will be about connecting and discovering with open houses at JPL, Descanso Gradens, Verdugo Hills Hospital (fabulous place to have a baby), Crescenta-Canada YMCA, Lanterman House and more.

Volunteer with the La Canada Trails Council, Community Center, LCF Tournament of Roses and La Canada Valley Beautiful.

Shop and support our local businesses! There are special events at local businesses, retail and restaurants. CB has a drawing for a gift basket. Stop in and fill out a ticket! T shirts are available at Flintridge Bookstore and the Y.

Dine at first-time-ever community tables at local restaurants!

Sunday:

Observe the 10th anniversary of 9/11 at an ecumenical service at La Canada Presbyterian Church in the courtyard.

Things to do this weekend (buy a vacation home Part 2)

Our cozy little cottage turned into a hole in the Lake that we pour money into:

 
About 500 gallons of Dunn Edwards white paint later, there is no sliding glass door and more debris than I could ever imagined fitting into this tiny little house. Everything that we opened up required $5000 to repair. Take for example the charming little bathroom:

 
Totally usable yet we decide to change out the shower. It turns out the shower is made of solid concrete (about 750 man hours to remove) so we decide in a moment of frugality to install a new pre-fab shower from Home Depot. I wish now that I had a photo of my husband driving out the 210 with that shower strapped to the rack of his truck. It was almost funny, it a dark sort of way. So after a treacherous drive up the mountain with our $400 prefab shower tied down, my husband figures out that it won't fit through that cute little door. We need to take the outside wall off to put the new shower into the hole left by all of that concrete that had probably been poured in place in 1940 when the house was originally built. By now I am totally depressed and unable to talk myself out of buyer's remorse...isn't that what your Realtor is for? Poor Keith Binkley. Realtors make terrible buyers. It does get better...more next week.

Local 4th of July Activities

If you do not want to stray far from La Canada this weekend but want to see the fireworks, CV Fireworks is hosting their annual fireworks show in the La Crescenta Elementary School play ground, 2800 Prospect, La Crescenta. If you want to head a bit east, check out "Americafest 2011" at the Rose Bowl. Tickets are $13 and the party starts at 2:00pm, with fireworks at 9:00pm. Be safe!

Things to do This Weekend and Next

Flintridge Books and Coffee will be giving a tour of the new building tomorrow (January 29th) after story time. The ribbon cutting for the new building will be February 7 at 2:00. My kids can't wait!

On February 12, Clifford the Big Red Dog will be there for story time. Come out and support a wonderful and important business in our community! Have you ever seen "You've Got Mail" or it's predecessor "The Shop Around the Corner?" We need to support our local shops, especially this one that competes with Amazon and Borders!
